Halloween words without the fright

Not everyone wants a scary puzzle. The word lists here lean on the warm side of Halloween — pumpkins, hayrides, candy corn, porch lights and neighbours at the door — alongside the classic ghosts and witches. That makes them usable in a memory-care lounge or a grandchild's afternoon without anyone having to vet the grid first.

The vocabulary is also deliberately familiar. Words like DOORBELL, CARAMEL and BLACKCAT sit in long-term memory for almost everyone, which matters more than difficulty when a puzzle is meant to be enjoyable rather than testing.

Running a Halloween puzzle session

October is the busiest month of the year for activity coordinators, and a word search is one of the few crafts that needs no setup, no scissors and no cleanup. Print one puzzle per person, keep a few answer keys aside, and the whole thing fits in a twenty-minute slot between other activities.

If you are running a group with mixed eyesight, print the same puzzle at both sizes — this page and the extra large print word search use identical letter shapes, so nobody feels they have been given the easy sheet.

Which size should you print?

Every puzzle on this page fills one US Letter sheet. What changes is how many letters share it — fewer letters means each one prints larger. The gentler grid is the one to reach for if reading the page is the hard part; the tougher grid is for solvers who want a long hunt and find the standard size too quick.

Want a whole page at one size instead? The extra large print puzzles use 10×10 grids with our biggest letters, the jumbo and easy pages use 12×12, and the giant and hard pages pack 22–24 words into an 18×18 grid.

Frequently asked questions

How do I print these halloween word searches?

Click "Download PDF" under either puzzle for a print-ready US Letter file (the answer key is included as page two), or click "Print" to send it straight to your printer. Both print well on A4 too. Print at 100% scale — avoid "fit to page", which can shrink the grid.

How large is the print in these puzzles?

Each grid is 15 × 15 letters on a full page, so letters print roughly half an inch tall — far larger than a newspaper puzzle. Everything uses the Atkinson Hyperlegible typeface, designed by the Braille Institute for low-vision readers.

How hard are these puzzles?

Words run across, down and diagonally, but never backwards. There are 88 words to find across 5 puzzles, and every answer key is free with the PDFs.

Can I photocopy these puzzles for a group?

Yes — print and photocopy them freely for your family, classroom, library, activity group or care home. That is exactly what they are for.

Are these Halloween puzzles too scary for a care home or classroom?

No. The word lists stay on the friendly side of Halloween — pumpkins, hayrides, candy and neighbours — with only the familiar ghost-and-witch vocabulary alongside. There is nothing graphic, and every word is one people already know.

When should I print Halloween puzzles for a group?

Most activity calendars run Halloween material through the second half of October. Printing in the first week gives you time to photocopy and means you are not competing for the printer on the day.
